Description: The real rarity is the Samonov, a fine neo-romantic work in three movements, conservative but elegant and not unoriginal. There seems to be some impressionistic influence in the first movement's meandering opening cadenza, and easy-going pastoral mood. The slow movement is lyrical and folk-influenced, while the sprightly finale is a technical tour de force for the flute. The piece is a logical companion to the more familiar, characteristically folk-inflected, warmly romantic Taktakishvili with its Rachmaninovian slow movement. Denisov's sonata is highly chromatic, but at this relatively early point in his career (1960) the composer had yet to fully embrace the iconoclastic modernism of his later work, and the work is sombre, tense and edgy rather than aggressively avant garde. Flautist-composer Tsybin's lively little Tarantella makes an appealing encore to the recital. Irina Stachinskaya (flute), Phillip Moll (piano).
