Description: Just under 20 minutes of first recordings in this new release. Lyapunov blends the Russian national Romanticism of the Balakirev school with the virtuosic tradition of Liszt and this release, covering most of his career from 1888 to 1912, amplifies this categorization. The 1903 Novelette uses Schumann’s second Novelette almost note-by-note for structure to begin and adds tributes to Balakirev along the way; the Chant du crépuslule of the following year is quite Russian in its melancholy atmosphere and the 1909 Humoreske is an example of the “Scherzo a la russe”. Florian Noack (piano).
