Description: This is claimed as a first recording of Burghauser’s (undated) arrangement of Janáćek’s famous piano cycle although a Singaporean website claims that the Emerson Quartet did nine of the ten movements for DG (a Japanese-only release? The US version has only the quartets and the Martinů Madrgals. Anyway, it’s a potent and powerful accomplishment which really adds to the emotional impact of the cycle. The quartets’ new Bärenreiter Critical Edition concerns mainly Intimate Letters which was unpublished at the composer’s death and whose subsequent 1938 edition contains changes made by František Kudláček, the first violinist of the Moravian Quartet which gave the work’s premiere.
