MICHAEL DAUGHERTY (b.1954): Tales of Hemingway for Cello and Orchestra, American Gothic for Orchestra, Once Upon a Castle for Organ and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 09S012
Description: The seventh Naxos Daugherty orchestral release brings three more big, colorful, neo-romantic scores inspired by Americana: the four movements of the cello concerto of last year have their origins in Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, “The Old Man and the Sea” and “The Sun Also Rises”; the “concerto for orchestra” American Gothic’s three movements (rev. 2013) are inspired by the landscapes of Grant Wood’s Iowa and his paintings and the four movements of the organ concerto - “The Winding Road to San Simeon”, “Neptune Pool”, “Rosebud” and “Xanadu” derive from William Randolph Hearst’s coastal California castle and his extra-large life and personality. Daugherty fans will know what to expect and will be delighted. Zuill Bailey (cello), Paul Jacobs (organ), Nashville Symphony; Giancarlo Guerrero.
