DU MING-XIN (b.1928): 10 Xinjiang Dances for Violin and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 09R067
Label: Marco Polo
Format: CD reissue
Description: The latest blast from the Marco Polo past is this sequence of pieces from ethnic peoples living in China’s huge Far West: six Kazakh, two Uigur and one each Tajik and Tartar folk songs turned into violin-and-orchestra pieces with prominent parts for piccolo in a couple (standing in for what native instrument the notes don’t tell us). Half are upbeat, half slow and all would fit into what we’d call in the West “light music” (this isn’t Bartók here!). Takako Nishizaki (violin), Singapore Symphony Orchestra; Choo Hoey. Original 1985 Hong Kong Records release.
