Description: The first, 1913 version of this symphony was only first recorded back in 2001 by Chandos. The one heard here was last recorded in 1941 by Eugene Goossens and the Cincinnati Symphony. Think of this as the intermediate version between the original and the one finalized in 1933 while Vaughan Williams was working on his Fourth Symphony and published in 1936. So there’s less here than in the Chandos but more than in all the other recordings of the final version. Bar numbers are instructive: 1913 - 1322 bars; 1920 - 1225 bars; 1933 - 1177 bars. Leon McCawley, John Lenehan (pianos), Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Martin Yates.
