Description: Many of these late pieces were produced for the demands of the commercial market but the symphony, completed at the end of 1917, is Stanford’s “war symphony”, using a penitential hymn tune for its first movement main subject, titleing the original source second movement Benedictus and using another, brighter hymn tune in the finale to express resoluteness and faith. Daniel Cook (organ of Durham Cathedral).
