Description: This is an impressive and original setting of the Requiem, liturgically authentic while permitting an element of the theatrical, or associated programmatic imagery. The work follows the sections of the Proper Mass without additional texts, in a thoroughly tonally based idiom, extending to an use of harmony somewhat reminiscent of Messiaen (no big surprise there) in the organ's more dramatic moments (and there is a very Messiaenic passage of birdsong in the radiant Lux æterna). The scoring, with the piano part important throughout, is inspired; the illuminating lightnings, sparks and shafts of color contributed by the piano form a striking contrasts with the massed effects of choir and organ, and an intimate humanity is suggested in sections in which the soloists' primary accompaniment is the piano, against somber washes of organ tone. The solo voices intone their text as impassioned prayers, with the choral contribution manifested as blocks and waves of sumptuously harmonized texture, reinforced by the organ. A fine work, both splendid (as requiems are wont to be) and of wide emotional scope. Jeanne Crousaud (soprano), Anna Destraël (mezzo), Mathieu Muglioni (tenor), Ciro Greco (baritone), Jean-Pierre Ferey (piano), François-Henri Houbart (choir organ), Frédéric Ledroit (organ), Groupe Vocal Pro Homine; Marie-Christine Pannetier.
