GEORG WAGENSEIL (1715-1777): Quartets for Low Strings - Sonatas I in D, II in F, III in C "Suite des pièces", IV in A, V in B and VI in G.
Catalogue Number: 09P018
Reference: ACC 24242
Description: These unusual works are remarkable not only for their instrumentation (three cellos and double bass but, in the manuscript Wagenseil also offers an alternative for two violas, cello and double bass), but for the fact that, in 1764, they predated Haydn's Op. 2 string quartets and, unlike the latter's Opp. 1 and 2, they are not in five-movement divertimento style but, rather, are among the earliest examples of the Classical four-movement string quartet genre. This recording uses the two-viola option in half of the six quartets. 2 CDs. Piccolo Concerto Wien; Roberto Sensi.
