Description: Roentgen wrote more works for cello than for any other instrument (14 sonatas!) and, unlike some of his works, these three are spread out over most of his career. No. 1 is from 1893, is the longest (at just under 29 minutes here) and is the only one in three distinct movements (although they are played attacca). It's in the mode of the Great Romantic Concerto with a big, striding, masculine first movement. As with his symphonies, with time, the works became much more concise, often, as here, in single-movement form. The 18-minute Second (1909) pays tribute to both Grieg (quoting from his Norwegian Folk Songs, Op. 66) and to Irish music (using a tune very close to an actual Irish folk song in its fourth segment) while the Third (1928), down to just under 15 minutes, is remarkable for its prominent use of the celesta and employment of bird calls. Gregor Horsch (cello), Netherlands Symphony Orchestra;  David Porcelijn.
