Description: Unlike his Third (see 09M001, offered three years ago this month) this 42-minute symphony (1927) was performed by Tyberg's close friend Rafael Kubelik and the Czech Philharmonic sometime in the 1930s. What we said before about the Third applies absolutely equally here: "Tyberg's main reference points in this symphony are Bruckner and Mahler. Beautiful themes, rhapsodically presented and gorgeously orchestrated - a miracle rediscovery brought to performance from handwritten manuscripts through the hard work of The Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies and of Falletta and her orchestra's executives." A first movement which immediately makes you think of Mahler until Bruckner appears a minute or two later; a lovely bucolic and pastoral slow movement; a januty scherzo with a pungent ländler-like trio; a Passacaglia and Fugue finale which manages to be relaxed and genial - what more could you want? The sonata, itself of significant size - four movements and 33 minutes - is also gloriously, deliciously stuck in the mid-19th century (mid-? Check that Beethovenian/Schumannian scherzo...). Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra; JoAnn Falletta.
