XAVIER BENGUEREL (b.1931): Concertante for Guitar, String Orchestra and Percussion, Music for Percussion and Strings, Concert de Tardor for Guitar and Orchesta, Porta Ferrada - Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 09N062
Description: Benguerel has a long history of delighting in concertante works, and it shows in these varied works combining creative dialogue between soloist and orchestra with a dazzling display of virtuoso technique for the various soloists. The acknowledged influence of Bartók is especially noticeable in the works' rhythmic incisiveness and vivid, subtly shaded tone colors - most evidently in the piece that openly refers to its Bartókian predecessor, but elsewhere as well. The two guitar concerti acknowledge the instrument's Spanish heritage in a modern idiom, and all the works make extensive and ingenious use of lively percussion textures. Jaume Torrent (guitar), Philippe Spiesser (percussion), Manon Philippe (violin), Mélodie Gilot (cello), Orchestre Perpignan Méditerranée; Daniel Tosi.
