Description: The Dark Backward is an impressive orchestral essay, taking its title from a mysterious utterance of Prospero in Shakespeare's The Tempest. Both the Shakespearean origin and the musical musical substance - derived from the most expressive trait of the Second Viennese School - are typical of Casablancas. Here as in the orchestral Epigrams, exuberantly virtuosic instrumental writing is allied to a mastery of colorful harmony and orchestration. The densely polyphonic, dramatic Postlude of 1991, with its brooding, late-late romantic atmosphere, is more complex of texture, than the more recent works, foreshadowing but not yet adhering to the greater formal clarity and expanded sonority of the later pieces. Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra; Salvador Mas-Conde.
