Description: Magnusson's piece explores themes of the search for answers at a time of change, uncertainty and hope. Boldly and reassuringly tonal, it sets up a tumultuous discourse between patterned, quasi-minimalistic order and more dissonant forces of discord in a crescendo of mounting tension. The Gillingham is an euphonium concerto, placing that most mellifluous, songful member of the brass family in a thoroughly tonal, three-movement structure with a neoclassical feel. The first movement is a briskly discursive sonata form, followed by a lyrical set of variations for a slow movement. The finale is an exuberant rondo with a lively progression of harmony leading to a satisfyingly rousing conclusion. It is good to welcome a new recording of Maslanka's hugely impressive musical canvas. Tonal and espousing as strong a sense of harmonic progression as one might wish, the entire 45-minute structure suggests an exhilarating journey through strange and exalted landscapes. The composer's sense of color is luminous and vital; every possibility offered by the resources of winds and percussion is fully explored along the way with great originality.
