Description: Collins wrote his only opera in 1939, a one-act, two-scene "Southern belle loves Northern soldier" affair to his own libretto. Purely orchestral interludes amount to 18 of the recording's 75-minute length and the musical styles include fairly inauthentic white-persons' ideas of what "Negro music" sounded like at the time as well as more authentic Celtic (Dixie and The Girl I Left Behind are both of Irish origin) material. Fourteen pages of detailed information accompany this brand-new recording, including a page on the decision to not bowderlize the libretto and to use the dreaded "N-word" which, given the opera's setting on a Virginia plantation in 1861 and 1865, occurs several times. Libretto included. Peter Auty (tenor), Andrea Baker (mezzo), Lisa Milne (soprano), Keel Watson (bass-baritone), Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus; Marin Alsop.
