Description: World Premiere Recording of Croft's Ode which was performed in Oxford just a week before Handel's two pieces in London. Croft's had a dual purpose: to celebrate the Peace of Utrecht and to get himself a doctorate from Oxford; strikingly, Croft's overture (including a section notated "With Noise of Cannons") bears a striking resemblance to Handel's overture to Music for the Royal Fireworks which, having been written 35 years later, can only have been Handel's tribute to his old friend and colleague. Texts included. Nicki Kennedy (soprano), William Towers (alto), Wolfram Lattke, Julian Podger (tenors), Peter Harvey (bass), Netherlands Bach Society; Jos van Veldhoven. SACD hybrid
