Description: These "histoires sacrées" come from the early 1680s, when Charpentier was at the height of his powers and working mainly for the Jesuits in their Counter-Reformation tasks. The genre was practically only practiced by him in France, inspired as he was by a trip to Rome where he discovered Carissimi's sacred oratorios. The texts are straight from the Bible but the drama and style are not far from the theatre. Latin-English texts. Il Seminario Musicale; Gérard Lesne. Original 2000 Astrée release.
