Description: That Schwarz-Schilling was in the great line of German symphonists is made clear by the two works recorded here. Heinrich Kaminski was his main composition instructor and Schwarz-Schilling's reliance on polyphony, counterpoint and traditional harmony is in a line reaching straight back to Bach while also being acutely aware of the outside world although choosing not to adopt serial or other post-war procedures as did others even of his generation. (Living through the Third Reich with a Jewish wife with forged racial documents is also likely to help focus one's attention.) The diatonica comes from 1957, characterized by filigree craftsmanship and a lithe classicism while the 1963 symphony is a stripped-down, austere product of a personal inner state; like Sibelius' Seventh, it gravitates harmonically around its key of C throughout its impressive metaphysical course. Staatskapelle Weimar; José Serebrier.
