LERA AUERBACH (b.1973): Piano Sonata No. 1, Il Segno, Memento Mori, Fantasia, Images from Childhood.
Catalogue Number: 09J078
Description: These passionate and intensely communicative, emotionally charged piano works suggest a direct continuation of a tradition that was gaining ground in Russia about a century ago but became sidelined as the mainstream of 20th-century music history played out. One is frequently reminded of Scriabin and those who came after - Feinberg, for instance - in Auerbach's frequently ambiguous harmony, highly chromatic and heading in the direction of atonality but by no means arriving there. The incorporation of bell sounds (in several sections of the sonata, the slow movements of Il segno) and chorales look further back into Russian music, and passages of dark-hued, Romantic expressiveness - the uneasy 'Requiem' that opens Memento mori is a good example - align themselves with Rachmaninov. Motoric toccata movements and passages of bitter irony hark back to Prokofiev and Shostakovich respectively. Ksenia Nosikova (piano).
