WILLIAM STERNDALE BENNETT (1816-1875): Symphony in G Minor, Op. 43, Overtures: The May Queen, The Wood Nymphs, Op. 20, The Naiades, Op. 15 and Parisina.
Catalogue Number: 09J053
Description: This will have been the first recording of the late G minor symphony of 1864/7 (not to be confused with the 1835 G minor symphony released by Unicorn-Kanchana in 1990) since it was recorded sometime in the early 90s as Lyrita was falling into paralysis; the Classico recording which was our October 2005 cover item was only the first to be issued. Braithwaite, of course, has the better orchestra and, while ignoring the first movement repeat, is a good deal sprightlier throughout this delighfully transparent Mendelssohnian confection. More Mendelssohnian confectionary accompanies it here with four concert overtures, the Naiades, like the symphony, having been inspired by the Rhein and its legends. London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra; Nicholas Braithwaite. Previously unissued.
