CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD (1852-1924): Clarinet Sonata, Op. 129, 2 Fantasies for Clarinet and String Quartet, 3 Intermezzi for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 13, Piano Trio No. 3 "Per aspera ad astra", Op. 158.

Description: No matter his age, Stanford still wrote beautiful, conservative, sometimes Brahmsian music, with a touch of Irish folk melody here and there (mood more than melody in the sonata's middle movement lament Caoine). The late trio may have been dedicated to the two sons of a colleague killed in World War I, but the outer movements are still bright and chipper while the two Fantasies were possibly written for student performance at the RCM and are timeless in their easily flowing romanticism. Robert Plane (clarinet), Gould Piano Trio, Mia Cooper (second violin), David Adams (viola).
