BORIS TCHAIKOVSKY (1925-1996): Theme and 8 Variations, DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975): Symphony No. 15 in A, Op. 141.
Catalogue Number: 09J011
Description: This live recording of Jan. 23, 1974 was Kondrashin's last appearance in Dresden and collectors may want it for his interpretation of Shostakovich's most unusual symphony as well as for the reason it's in these pages - the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's Variations. Lasting 17 minutes, it begins in utter silence, slowly building to a manic Shostakovichian toccata-like frenzy and blossoms into a passage of the most gloriously affirmative and - dare I say it? Yes, particularly because of the source - spiritually luminous music that we are ever likely to hear from a Soviet composer in any period. The booklet has many photographs and much interesting information, including a discussion of the difficulties of doing radio broadcasts from the acoustically hideous Kulturpalast in Dresden from the original recording engineer of this and many other radio broadcasts from Dresden. Staatskapelle Dresden; Kirill Kondrashin.
