JURGIS KARNAVIČIUS (1887-1941): String Quartets No. 3, Op. 10 and No. 4 (World Premiere Recordings).
Catalogue Number: 08X005
Reference: ODE 1387-2
Description: Though written in 1922 and 1925 and played in St. Petersburg, these quartets were not heard again until 1969 and 1980 , possibly due to their “modern”, expressionist language which would have clashed with the beginnings of the Soviet state’s demands for music easily understood by proletarians and possibly just through his having returned to the independent Lithuania in 1927 after which he turned to stage music. Can we hope for more? Karnavičius wrote a Lithuanian Fantasy for string quartet which he also orchestrated and two symphonic poems (Ulalume and The Oval Portrait). Vilnius String Quartet.
