FRANK MARTIN (1890-1974): Ein Totentanz zu Basel im Jahre 1943.
Catalogue Number: 08S007

Description: At the request of his mime-artist niece, Martin wrote this score for professional dancer (Death) and twelve mimes with local Basel-drums, a wind orchestra and a small string band, celebrating the medieval Dance of Death so common to German-speaking lands - Basel had a 37-picture mural dating from the mid 15th century so the tradition was especially strong there. The music is part medieval-sourced and adapted and part contemporary jazz dance music with several marches for three Basel-drums and it forms a 22-number series of different types of people’s encounters with Death, here a friendly and empathetic figure. 66 minutes of Frank Martin you almost certainly never knew existed! German-English texts. ARMAB Wind Orchestra; Sacramentskoor Breda, Hineni String Orchestra, Basel Drum, Geoffrey Madge (piano), Bastiaan Blomhert (conductor).
