Description: Jaëll studied under Saint-Saëns and Franck and was a friend of Liszt, spending several weeks each year with him at Weimar (in a note to her, the great composer/pianist said "If your music had a man's name on it, it would be found on every piano"). A pedagogue, she also wrote several theoretical treatises on piano technique. Liszt’s influence is obvious in the 25-year-old’s sonata, not so much in form (it’s in four separate movements) but in its forward-looking harmonic constructions; much else here is technically exacting (she was also a brilliant concert pianist) as well as grandly romantic in character. Cora Irsen (piano).
