CARTER PANN (b.1972): The Piano's 12 Sides, The Bills, The Cheese Grater, Your Touch.
Catalogue Number: 08Q086
Description: 12 Sides is an hour-long suite of brilliantly inventive, varied character pieces, very tonal and obviously the product of a genuine composer-pianist (as distinct from a composer who happens to play the piano). Pann's chosen idiom frequently, though not invariably, tends toward the jazzy, with much syncopated rhythm and bluesy harmonies - admirers of Bolcom (not coincidentally, one of The Bills, the other being Albright) will find a great deal to enjoy here. Overall, the style falls into the broad category of neo-romanticism, with influences of impressionism, various popular styles and a pot-pourri of tonal 20th-century idioms, somewhat reminiscent of another musical magpie of a pianist-composer, Rzewski. Joel Hastings (piano).
