Description: Chronologically hese three works are quite early examples of the romantic cello concerto, Gross's dating from 1834 and Rietz's possibly a year or so earlier. Both composers played as teenagers in a Berlin concert orchestra and both had strong ties to the Schumann-Mendelssohn circle: Rietz meeting Mendelssohn while studying with Zelter and later following the latter in posts at Leipzig and Dresden while Gross played chamber music with Clara Schumann and, while in Estonia, became good friends with Ferdinand David. All three works sound exactly like what you would think would come out of such a milieu with the unusual addition of the formally adventurous Fantaisie beginning with a two-minute cello solo. Must-haves for collectors of early Romanticism! Klaus-Dieter Brandt (cello), L'arpa festante; Riccardo Minasi.
