Description: These recent works continue to reinforce Sciarrino's standing as one of the most complete innovators in contemporary music - at least within the confines of what he is trying to achieve. His fluid, breathing manipulations of sonic material really don't sound like anybody else, and in a very real sense his works are not so much musical pieces as natural phenomena, or at least a strikingly vivid facsimile thereof. In the Cantiere the voice floats in disembodied limbo in a reverberant soundfield populated by evanescent gestures, wisps of sound, only intermittently recognisable as originating from conventional instruments. The Duetti also set up a game of echoes, fleeting sonic illumination and shadow in a space with constantly shifting boundaries. L'altro giardino is an expanded version of a previous work, setting a nineteenth-century Sicilian text. Sciarrino's living, breathing, fantastical acoustic 'garden' full of fragile, delicate organic textures surrounds the voice in textures of dreamlike unreality and vivid nocturnal images. Italian texts. Anna Radziejewska (mezzo), Ensemble Algoritmo; Marco Angius.
