Description: Both cpo (November of 2009 - 11L081) and Toccata Classics (May 2011 - 05M065) have put out Volume Ones of Weinberg's violin sonatas but no subsequent volume has come from either source. Which makes this super-budget priced, brand-new recording an easy way to vacuum up the composer's whole œuvre in this genre: and, these are the only recordings of Nos. 2 (a transitional piece from 1944 between the relaxed lyricism of No. 1 and the darker, more acerbic styles of Nos. 3 through 5) and 6 (a grim, all-slow movement work from 1982 influenced by Weinberg finally receiving confirmation that his family had been murdered at a Nazi labor camp in Poland in 1943). 3 CDs. Budget-price. Sebastian Foron (violin), Matti Raekallio (piano).
