Description: Cartan was born into a family of famous mathematicians and died at the age of 25 from tuberculosis. Only a handful of works exist: some songs, a large-scale choral/orchestral work and the four chamber works recorded here. Cartan himself claimed Debussy, Roussel and Stravinsky as "spiritual fathers" but Roussel is the most important, especially in the 25-minute second quartet (1931) and in the choice of instrumentation for the 1926-27 Introduction and Allegro (see Roussel's Divertissment, Op. 6 for the same forces) while the 1930 Sonatina, which achieved public success at the 1931 ISCM festival in Oxford, also suggests Poulenc.
