Description: A student of Dutilleux in the late 1960s, D'Haene shows the influence of his teacher in his refined lyricism and meticulously judged balancing of timbre. However, his idiom is more conventionally neo-romantic, with more consistently massive orchestral textures than is typical of the older composer, though leavened with similar buoyant, evanescent detail. Harmonically, too, D'Haene is much more conventionally tonal in his approach. The first movement opens with a bold orchestral statement, leading to an initially calming entrance for the violin, which develops into an increasingly agitated dialogue between soloist and orchestra. The second movement begins with the work's main slow section, a melancholy underpinning of the violin's generously lyrical melodic line. This gives way to vigorously propulsive music before a sparkling cadenza and a calm conclusion. Dutilleux's Sur le même accord, a miracle of development of diverse material from deliberately limited means, is a considerable bonus. Yossif Ivanov (violin), Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Lyon; Kazushi Ono.
