Description: Written in 1776 for the death of his employer's (Prince Oettingen-Wallerstein) young wife, this beautiful, short requiem was used 15 years later at Mozart's Prague memorial service with a Benedictus and Agnus Dei added by an unknown hand (possibly the organizer of the memorial, Joseph Strobach [1731-1794]). Also known as Kaul I:5, this symphony, generally relaxed and phlegmatic, with the longest slow movement of any of Rosetti's, has apparently not been recorded before (there are three other E flat symphonies and they have appeared each on Arte Nova, Teldec and RBM). Its slow and final movements were parodied by a Benedictine monk some years later and are recorded here for special interest. The melodically rich Salve Regina is of unknown date while the 1784 Jesu, rex was composed for the confirmation of the child whose mother's death was the source of the requiem which began this truly fascinating and intriguingly well-planned disc. MarcĂa Porter (soprano), Anna Havliková (mezzo), Ondrej Socha (tenor), Matthew Markham (baritone), The Prague Singers, La Gioia, Camerata Filamonica Bohemia; Johannes Moesus. SACD hybrid
