Description: 'Three Pieces' is an early work, from 1955, not yet in the composer's mature style, yet a thoroughly compelling and powerful work in its own right. The first blends Schoenbergian dodecaphony with the incisive, percussive rhythms of Stravinsky and Bartók, also present in the energetic third, while the second explicitly references Janacek. The Third Quartet is much later - 1978 - and here, Halffter employs a more modern, and more personal, vocabulary. The work derives its inspiration from the sculptures of Eduardo Chillida, concerned with space and emptiness; amorphous scurrying music alternates with static, frozen material and silences. The Sixth also makes potent use of silence, here alternating with material of the most contrasting character possible, with sudden aggressive eruptions of explosive pizzicati or clusters, and elongated, aching melodic lines in dense polyphonic textures. Arditti Quartet.
