Description: A work of postmodernistic multiplicity of influences and derivations, 'Of a Dark Flame' is a richly sonorous tapestry of timbres and instrumental colors, heightened by the incorporation of a dense, omnipresent electronic part and the unearthly vocal acrobatics of a flamenco singer as one of three soloists. Like a good proportion of works that post-date the academic concerns of the avant-garde from decades past, the piece is far from unapproachable, with striking motoric rhythmic passages (suggesting, but not explicitly emulating traditions outside the western concert hall, from non-classical music to that of the east) and a plasticity of texture (enhanced by spatial disposition of sound effects) that is immersive and hypnotic, with a mystical, hallucinatory effect. The middle-eastern exoticism suggested by the complex, microtonally inflected melismatic flamenco singing extends this sense of music that effortlessly crosses cultural and æsthetic boundaries. No texts. Arcángel (flamenco singer), Roberto Fabbriciani (flute), Stefano Scodanibbio (double bass), Ensemble Residencias; Maruicio Sotelo.
