Description: "Edition RadioMusiken Vol. 1" offers us a work first broadcast on Radio Breslau Dec. 14, 1929. Part of an ongoing effort from 1923-33 to develop musical genres especially for the new medium of radio, this one is a socially charged radio play or secular oratorio or cantata - actually belonging more to the type of Weill's Threepenny Opera: sound effects, dialogues and narration introduce musical numbers which veer from jazz, cabaret and other popular musical styles like operetta to classical forms, sometimes empoying all in the same number. The general subject is the suffering of the desk-bound common worker, steamrolled by big business and modernity in all its forms. It was extremely successful and was later actually staged in April 1933; under the Nazis, Nick was dismissed from his radio post and his music and the literary works of his friend, the writer of the texts Erich Kästner, were added to the bonfires. What would be a fascinating slice of life in Germany as it teetered on the edge of the Great Depression is, unfortunately, made accessible only to German-speakers by the lack of texts. 2 CDs. No texts. Marcus Günzel (speaker), Christian Grygas (baritone), Elke Kottmair (soprano), Chorus and Orchestra of the Staatsoperetten Dresden; Ernst Theis.
