Description: The piano quintet (1875) was Herzogenberg's first composition in almost three years and the first since his turning from Wagner and the New German School back to the traditional group of composers headed by Brahms. The string quartet is his fifth and last, from 1889, is slightly unusual for being in three movements but is rich in Brahmsian overtones and comes from before the shattering death of his 44-year-old wife, which produced the grief-stricken op. 75 piano quartet which we offered back in March (03K049) as part of a two-disc set at mid-price. Incidentally: it didn't sell as well as Herzogenberg discs usually do in these pages since collectors probably didn't read the blurb closely enough to find out that the first disc had entirely new material while the second disc was a reissue! Minguet Quartet, Oliver Triendl (piano).
