DMITRI KABALEVSKY (1904-1987): 4 Preludes, Op. 5, 24 Preludes, Op. 38, 6 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 61.
Catalogue Number: 08L013
Description: All of Kabalevsky's Preludes make up a 77-minute disc: the early op. 5 (1927) still have Prokofievian influences but the big set of 24, written during 1943-44, are in the composer's mature style, each using melodic material from a Russian folksong as was to be expected from a good Soviet composer in time of war. The six Preludes and Fugues are from 1958-59 and are necessarily longer, with a wide variety of contrast and expression (and with edifying titles like "At the Young Pioneer Summer Camp"!). Alexandre Dossin (piano).
