STÅLE KLEIBERG (b.1958): Violin Concerto, Double Bass Concerto.
Catalogue Number: 08L009
Description: Many collectors will remember back to January 2005 when we offered Kleiberg's sensuously neo-romantic The Bell Reef and two other works on the Aurora label. These concertos (from 2005 and 1999 respectively) offer more of this composer's attractive and approachable style, the violin work having a particularly Nordic feel although its marshalling of thematic transformation, homophony and polyphony make use of the basic building blocks of western classical composition. The double bass concerto makes much use of the high harmonics of which the instrument is capable (and gives it plenty of duetting with the orchestral bassoon and, in the third movement, clarinet) while not stinting on the meaty lower register as well. Much of it has a dreamy, pastoral quality which some might think is more Nordic than the translucent hints of Sibelian Romanticism in the violin concerto. No matter how you cut it, this is gorgeous music from a composer of a unique style which practically anyone interested in tonal 20th century music should respond to. Marianne Thorsen (violin), Göran Sjölin (bass), Trondheim Symphony Orchestra; Daniel Reuss. SACD hybrid.
