Description: Rejecting all of the 20th century experiments in the avant-garde, Guastavino's music remained resolutely tonal all his life, based on singable melodies and tonal harmonies (although he was perfectly happy to use dissonance for effect). His influences range from the European (Falla, Albéniz, Granados, Rachmaninov, Debussy and Ravel) to such Argentinian predecessors as Alberto Williams and Julian Aguirre while his personal voice tends to be elegant, slightly nostalgic but with plenty of brio in his manifestation of the spirit of popular song and folk melodies. 13 pages of English-only notes complement this three-and-a-half hour bonanza of beautiful, memorable and approachable music. 3 CDs for the price of 2. Martin Jones (piano).
