Description: The genre of the Viennese "lute concerto" will be unfamiliar to most, so the most important thing is to realize that these works from 1701 are not concertos for lute and orchestra. The instruments comprise varying combinations of lute(s), violins and bass, ranging from four-part string writing with 3 obligato lutes of different sizes, to single violin, viola da gamba, single lute and bass. One "concerto" has four movements, the three others have ten, nine and seven (these are really suites of baroque dance forms). The various lutes sound quite unusual and remarkable. Hubert Hoffmann (lute), Ars Antiqua Austria; Gunar Letzbor.
