SVEND NIELSEN (b.1937): Sommerfugledalen - Et Requiem for 12 Solo Singers.
Catalogue Number: 08J112
Description: This extended a cappella vocal cycle is based on a famous sonnet cycle by the Danish poet Inger Christensen. The poem uses vivid imagery of butterflies as a point of departure for a meditation on the ephemeral nature of life, and ultimately, on death itself (the work bears the subtitle 'A Requiem'). Nielsen has matched the poetical imagery with music that is both of extraordinary beauty, luminous and ethereal, though inflected with restrained and economical use of moaning sliding tones, whispering and other vocal effects to hint at the levels of meaning behind the exquisite colors of the surface. The predominant vocabulary is romantic and tonal, with allusions to earlier choral traditions evident in the part-writing of some movements. A bonus track has the poet reading the entire poem (in Danish, of course). Danish-English texts. Ars Nova Copenhagen; Tamás Vetö.
