Description: The symphony is designated 'in memory of the victims of the tsunami, 2004' and incorporates some elements of music of the devastated region in the form of pentatonic modalities which inflect the composer's predominantly post-romantic vocabulary. As befits the subject it is a powerful and serious work. It features a virtuosic concertante solo part, written for the present soloist, in connection with which the composer mentions three earlier models: Szymanowsky's Sym. No. 4, Bernstein's Sym. No. 2 and Turangalila. Of these, the closest comparison is probably the Bernstein, both in terms of language and the relationship of the piano to the orchestra. The pianist has several extended solo passages, but is absent from the lamenting second movement. The concerto is scored for larger forces than the symphony, and the textures are more complex, the material more generally angular and less organically developed. The virtuosic solo part is essentially lyrical, by contrast, and extremely expressive. Ananda Sukarlan (piano), Manuel Guillén (violin), Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid; José Ramón Encinar.
