Description: The muscular and robust sonata is based on a tonal framework, more or less explicitly employed. The middle movement consists of ten individual sections each with its own character; extended passages are frankly atonal, but there is always a pull toward a tonal resolution and this, combined with the alternation of melodic eloquence with vehement dissonance creates a powerful sense of tension and release throughout the movement. The preceding fantasia similarly consists of interlocking, opposing atonal and tonal motifs, and the finale, a wide-ranging, cumulative set of variations on an ambiguous, contemplative theme, brings this powerful and moving sonata to a satisfying conclusion. The companion piece, written for the present soloist, is a whimsical caprice with searching undertones; less virtuosic but similarly varied in texture and expression. Hsing-ay Hsu (piano).
