ANTONÍN TUCAPSKY (b.1928): Stabat Mater (Pavla Aunická [mezzo], Roman Janál [baritone], Prague Mixed Choir, Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra; Vladimír Válek), Mary Magdalene (Nao Higano [soprano], Jan Steyer [organ], Prague Mixed Choir).

Description: Dating from 1989 and 1991, these two works are firmly in the Czech historical tradition of large-scale sacred works. Tucapsky's error which forced him to leave Czechoslovakia in 1975 was neither political nor musical (i.e. avant-garde), it was personal: he married an English soprano in 1972, costing him his professional posts. Since 1975, he's made a decent career in England, teaching and composing and never losing the traditionally based styles of his Moravian and, generally, Czech forebears.
