HENRY DESMAREST (1661-1741): Vénus et Adonis.
Catalogue Number: 08J022
Reference: AM 127
Description: Desmarest worked within the Lullian framework of the lyric stage but added his own special talents in this 1697 production, especially in the use of the chorus, while not forgetting his learned counterpoint and gift for presenting the pathos and delicate emotions demanded by the story of Adonis' first love. The note-writer suggests that Demarest's infatuation with, and abduction of, an 18-year-old girl and flight from the authorities shortly before the work's premiere helped him limn the wild emotions of Adonis. 2 CDs. French-English libretto. Karine Deshayes (mezzo), Sébastien Droy (tenor), Chorus of the Opéra national de Lorraine, Les Talens Lyriques; Christophe Rousset.
