Description: This could just as well have gone under “Schubert” since the 41-minute completion of the 1825 sonata (Krenek did this in 1921, modestly stating that he only had to use his knowledge of Schubert’s style and techniques to supply what Schubert might have done himself - and there were 272 bars of the finale already extant) takes up over half the disc. The 1948 sonata is dodecaphonic but in the gracefully elegant style of the First Vienna School, the 1950 George Washington Variations wittily graft modern techniques onto a march published in 1796 and the 1:45 Prelude (the only first recording here) is another example of lyrical application of twelve-tone techique from 1944.
