Description: This new series continues with the ultra-romantic First which, with its influences of Bruckner, Brahms and Strauss, announced its youthful composer's arrival on the European musical scene in 1911 (revised in 1913); Järvi lops three minutes off of the cpo Rasilainen recording. The conductor chooses the 1947 revision of the 1922 Sinfonia funebre (a contemporary critic described it as 'enveloped in a dark violet cloak over which black veils wave') which may explain why it’s a whole eight minutes faster than the cpo, whose notes make no mention of the revised version. So Atterberg completists will certainly find plenty to compare! Göteborg Symphony Orchestra; Neeme Järvi.
