Description: Weinberg's next-to-last symphony dates from 1991 and is dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. In single-movement form with six sections, it lasts just under 54 minutes in this World Premiere Recording and encompasses emotions from desolation to protest with a couple of sections of slightly demented klezmer music, a double-bass solo taken from the Op. 108 sonata for solo double bass, quotations from several other of Weinberg's compositions and from Chopin. Some sections have a chilly, stricken, end-of-the-world emptiness that outdoes Shostakovich. The Polish Tunes of 1950 belong to the same opus number as the Moldavian Rhapsody but, unlike that brash and brightly colored piece, this one (also a First Recording) suggests the more introspective qualities one would associate with Chopin. Veronika Bartenyeva (soprano), Siberian Symphony Orchestra; Dmitri Vasilyev.
