Description: All these Polish clarinet works are tonal: Penderecki's 1959 Miniatures are spiky like Stravinsky or Prokofiev; Szalowski (1936) in Gallic neo-classical style; Rathaus (1927) pushes tonal boundaries a little in the second-longest piece here - a three-movement sonata of over 16 minutes - but doesn't stray too far from expressionist late romanticism; Perkowski (1955) embraces both neo-classical brevity and neo-Romantic lyricism while the biggest piece on the disc, written for this recording, is Moss' 19-minute Elegia. If you remember his orchestral disc which we offered back in December (12N080), you'll also remember that he writes film scores, and this work runs like a series of psychological mindscapes, from anxious to angry to phlegmatic, which bounce off of each other, tonality and atonality used expressively for mood- and tone-painting.
