Description: This is one of four operas written between 1791 and 1793 in the relative safety of Le Havre, where Cherubini had repaired from the turmoil of revolutionary Paris. Set in China, it features a paradigmatic opposition between a cruel, unscrupulous and depraved general's son and a noble, selfless, brave and idealistic orphan (who's, of course, in love with the daughter of the country's ruler) - in effect, the decayed ancien regime of France vs. the new republic and its model citoyen. Ironic, parodistic and critical, it's an important milestone on Cherubini's way to his greatest operas - and it was never performed. Lacking an overture and a finale, which have been supplied from other Cherubini operas for this performance, Koukourgi is one of the Classical opera finds of the year. Daniel Prohaska, Johannes Chum (tenors), Çigdem Soyarslan (soprano), Daniel Belcher (baritone), Chorus and Extrachorus of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Kärntner Symphony Orchestra; Peter Marschik.
